She flitted through the window and over to the bed, a spark of light glinting off the edge of the coin that she held tight. She was excited. Queen Toothiana would be excited about this one too because it was his first tooth! Normal procedure was to fly under the pillow, retrieve the tooth and leave the coin, and exit the room, but she loved it when she collected a first tooth and couldn't help but pause to peer into the child's face.
He was mostly in shadow, but enough light came in for her to make out his brown hair and childish face. Even in sleep there was almost something impish in it, fun loving, but it was the mouth her attention was drawn to. His lips were parted slightly as soft breaths escaped gently to the air, the deep quiet breaths of sound slumber. Very faintly could she make out the white of his teeth.
She really shouldn't have, but she wanted to see where the tooth had been, so she sat down on his chin, causing his mouth to open just enough to make out the empty place were the tooth had fallen from. He stirred, turning over to hold the pillow closer with both hands clasped beneath it, and she hurried to finish collecting the tooth.
Job done, she flew back to the window, admiring the tooth as she flew.
   "Wait, you forgot something."
Whipping around she found the child sitting up, looking at her seriously, no trace of sleep in his face. In his hand he held out the coin.
She backed away, piping that it was for him, but she could see that her words meant nothing to him.
Pushing the blankets back he got down from the bed and padded across the floor towards her, still looking at her curiously. "Why do you have my tooth?"
Her guess of brown hair was correct, now that he had stepped into the puddle of light she could see it was tousled into peaks, and she could also see the warm brown of his eyes. She shook her head, the only answer she could give that he'd understand.
"How did you come in here?" His childish wonder was overcoming his questions as to why she was there.
She zipped through the window, and back in, showing him how she did it.
Sitting by the window he gazed with wide eyes at a magical world he'd never seen before. "It's real," he murmured, past dreams surfaced of a world like the one he was viewing. Fairies darted pass, going on with the tooth collection, and golden sand curled through the air, making it all seem magical. Looking at the fairy next to him, "And you're part of it."
   She nodded.
His gaze returned out the window. A yawn escaped him, though he wasn't ready to fall asleep again, and slowly his head lowered until it was resting on his folded arms on the windowsill. "You're collecting the teeth," he said sleepily.
She waited, it wouldn't be long until the dream sand found him, she could already see it making its way over.
"Do you have a name fairy?" he asked, smothering another yawn with hand. "Mine's Jack."
Folding her wings, she waited, wanting to see that Jack properly went to sleep. She liked this child. He hadn't reacted like other kids, he hadn't tried to catch her or see if she had any more coins. He'd tried to return the coin. The logical guess was that it was because of his young age, but that didn't seem to be the case, at least she didn't believe that was the reason.
Seeing that he was now asleep and dreaming she left the room and flew quickly towards the Tooth Palace, excited about what she had to tell, and also because she was late and Toothiana would be worried. Jackson Overland was probably the first child ever to try to return the coin.

Jack woke beside the window the next morning. Noticing the coin he picked it up, wondering. "It wasn't a dream," he whispered, and hid the coin. He never told true story about what happened that night, but whenever he questioned if what happened was real he would pull out the coin and recall in perfect detail what had taken place.
First, the idea behind this is: how is it that Baby Tooth is the only fairy not to be insanely in love with Jack? I ended up leaving out any real answer to this, I believe its because she feels that he's a friend whereas the other fairies just see Jack. Second: I could've taken this in several directions. When I first wrote this I had a much longer, and boring, ending showing how Baby Tooth recognized Jack after he saved her from the Nightmare, and how he didn't remember her because, of course, he's now Jack Frost and has no memory. And third: I can't come up with the perfect title! I renamed it over three times before tacking this one on and it still doesn't fit, oh well. So the title refers to the fact that it was the first time Baby Tooth met Jack.
I know there are a few theories about why Baby Tooth has a connection with Jack, but this appealed to me. It shows that when Jack was a child he believed, and he could see them, and it also gives a connection with him and Baby Tooth. In a way that also explains Tooth's infatuation with him. Mostly though, I wrote this because,  as far as I can see, Baby Tooth doesn't receive nearly as much attention as she should. Thanks for reading!

Great ideas behind the short story. I like it :)

I've been thinking of something like this for one of my own stories where Baby tooth tells Toothiana about Jack and his teeth. A very early start to the rumours about them, but it could be a cute starting point right here when Baby tooth met Jack.
